• Surprising jump in July durable goods orders
Analysts were expecting durables orders to remain unchanged from the previous month. Transportation orders rose 3.1 percent in July, the largest gain since February, on a 28 percent rise in civilian aircraft orders.

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said she was disappointed by the increase in deaths involving drunken motorcycle riders. A total of 1,621 motorcyclists were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes in 2007, an increase of 7.5 percent.
